Ubisoft is going through something of a sticky patch, with Assassin’s Creed Shadows getting delayed and Star Wars Outlaws underperforming. Now boss Yves Guillemot has admitted what many suspected: first-person shooter XDefiant is also falling short of the French publisher’s targets.
Speaking as part of an investors meeting, the bigwig said: “We had behind expectations for XDefiant, which we will give you a bit more detail at the end of October. To a much lesser extent [than Star Wars Outlaws], with a limited impact was a lower expectation for XDefiant.”
Ubisoft had previously said XDefiant was “off to an encouraging start”, but there had been reports the game had been struggling to maintain players. Insider Gaming claimed the development team had until the end of Season 3 to turn things around, but in a subsequent statement it said the title is “absolutely not dying”.
It seems that the big challenge for Ubisoft is getting players to open their wallets, as while there’s been an uptick in players with recent updates, very few are coughing up their cash. As a free-to-play shooter, player retention is a big deal – but it means little if they aren’t actually spending any money.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens here. Better games than XDefiant have ended up getting cancelled, so it’s going to take one helluva an effort to turn things around. The good news is that Ubisoft generally has a good track record when it comes to post-release support – but the French firm has never found itself under this kind of financial pressure before.

Multiplayer live service shooters are the absolute worst investment right now. Have they not been paying attention to the market?
Well, a few weeks ago if some YouTubers were to be believed it was a Call of Duty killer.
After giving it a whirl can’t say I’m surprised, it certainly didn’t kill anything I have for other tactical/arcade/online shooters.
I love that there’s competition, but I’d love it even more if there were good competition.
I think back to when I was first online with a dial up modem, I had Quake, Unreal Tournament, Counter Strike and so on. All such massive player bases and fans.
Now it’s CoD or Fortnite. With hints of Val or Apex Legends for the YouTubers trying to be edgy.
God I miss how much decent competition there was back then.
Ah well, onwards and upwards, hopefully something will crop up one day that grabs people. Enough people to be financially worth it that is.
@TrickyDicky99 PS5 sold incredibly well last year to be fair, though. It was always going to be down this year.
(But I agree, their inability to get the price down is becoming a problem.)
Once Concord stole its player base it was all over.
Should've called it XSubmissive and added some musclemommy skins to tap into the untapped overlap of Paypigs and F2P players.
Give me a call Ubi, we'll work something out.
@TomasVrboda I agree live service shooters definitely seem to be the biggest gamble in gaming. There’s clearly a very high risk for high reward but the failure rate is high.
Like I’ve said before they’d probably get better odds taking that money down the casino.
@NEStalgia all two of them
I stopped playing it to be honest. Actually enjoyed the first season, zero stakes and just pure shooty fun. But the content didn’t really arrive in time.
@TomasVrboda it's probably because games take so many years to develop. They saw Fortnite printing way too much money and decided on live service games a few years later. That's probably why we see so many of those failing in the past couple years.
Publishers spent so much money trying to get into the market, they still try to release those games even if it fails. It was just a horrible decision from pretty much every single publisher with the end result dropping like turds all at the same-ish time.
Ubi brought a lot of this on themselves.
The only good thing that came out of this miserable generation is Ubisoft going down hard.
My years of complaining about these turds is finally having a payoff.
It's the fact that they've always had so much potential and just absolutely waste it so badly.
They've become too complacent. "They'll buy this crap anyway, who cares?".
Well, gamers have been pushed too far, in too many aspects for far too long and they're voting with their wallets. Good riddance.
Put the consumers back at #1 priority and I hope other publishers (SONY!!) take notes b
They should’ve focused on adding multiplayer back to Assasins Creed; There is NOTHING like it, & Decieve Inc sucks
@McTwist $ony is not listening , don’t get your hopes up with that one. The PS4 success was so big & made them real comfortable & cozy .
Anyone who has played Siege knows full well that Ubisoft's skin designs are atrocious and rarely worth money.
Keep Microsoft away. Thanks.
This, to me, is a continuation of their fall from grace.
They put out these half baked games with good concepts but they consistently fail to make them game of the year quality and seem perfectly fine with 'good enough' and often less than that sometimes.
Assassin's Creed Mirage was a big let down with it's poor voice acting and face animations. Skull & Bones was described as quadruple A (insert laughter). Star Wars Outlaws was buggy and poorly recieved and they litter games with microtransactions.
I suspect it's management that's the issue here but man... UBISOFT SUCKS!
But they continuously get away with it...
When CoD releases that'll be the final nail in the coffin, too.
People are sick of live service shooter games, they already have fortnite, cod, and apex. If ubisoft want to make successful shooter live service games, they need to make better game than those 3 titles.
@PoeticJustice At this point I think it's the quality of their employee, they have so many people but their games is buggy as heck. And after reading the news that their employee are going on a strike because they don't want to go to office 3 days a week because the company really need them to fix their games, yeah, ubisoft is done if they can't find better employee, and fast.
@wiiware it’s been leaked by developers inside the studios to commentators online that they have been letting the skilled ones leave and have been replacing them with junior developers. Cost cutting measures, hence why in the past few years their games have been atrocious at launch.
poor ubisoft 😭🎻
I'm sure Yves will still find ways to blame those dastardly gamers though, how dare they not pay these absurd prices for unfinished, boring and insulting games!
Off topic......sort of but I just want to say that when it rains here in Ireland it pours. The headline just reminded me of Irish weather.
On topic I completely forgot about this game's existence until right now this very minute.
Microsoft about to purchase another publisher. Rather than getting third party publishers on Xbox. They'll become the biggest PlayStation third party publisher. Haha
Ubisoft should get used to not owning their company
@nomither6 The last thing on earth Assassin's Creed need is multiplayer...
@get2sammyb blame the cough era for production costs. As almost all semi conductors are made in China and Taiwan. Plants shut down but demand for chips increased throughout the cough era. So there is still a lag. So yes these cheap SOCs for the consoles could be made cheaper as they are old, however Sony, Nintendo, and microsoft need to pay for their production lines. Which have gone up in cost. Also new production methods for chips are being introduced recently. And the tools that make them are super super expensive. So consumers of chip manufacturers have to pay the cost. Going forward we cannot expect to see any serious reduction in costs for consoles throughout its generation. Unless the west actually gets serious about challenging east asia in semiconductor production.
If they brought back R6 (Vegas style or earlier), GR (GRAW or earlier), and Splinter Cell I'd be sitting ready with an open wallet. They went open world and everyone got bored.
@djlard brotherhood/3 & 4 all had good multiplayer , why would it be the last thing AC needs, did you ever play them ?
@nomither6 I squeezed my teeth to try to grab multiplayer trophies in Brotherhood to get platinum, but it was so boring I gave up. Singleplayer games shouldn't have multiplayer included, because for lots of people it is simply that part they won't play and trophy hunt is dead. They should be separated or optional. Lots of trophies are now unachievable because there is no one on server anymore. And from history it is known that multiplayer implementation into singleplayer games ruined whole experience of game because level design was heavily unbalanced for one or another side.
Looks like Ubisoft are the ones that can't get used to people not only their games
@TheElectroFunky Then two generations ago you had Halo, CoD, Battlefield, Killzone, TF2. Even single player games like Bioshock 2 had competent multiplayer gameplay. The first, first-party Sony FPS in 11 years was Concord, and now it's dead. As a non-BR FPS fan, the genre is personally in a drought 😢
@TrickyDicky99 The console also was quite a bit cheaper.
@Vaako007 I don't understand that the Netherlands does not do something like this ASML is from here would be a smart decision.
@FPSfan1337 Couldn’t agree more, I really love FPS multiplayer games and yet they’ve really fell to the wayside given how successful BR has been of late. I’m hoping the next Battlefield will get me back into that franchise, I still play Battlefield 4 as I can’t rip myself away from the idea and scope of people feeling like it’s a big war and you’re all playing a part and contributing.
Hopefully we get some good things happening over the coming years in that genre!
Ubisoft has done this all to themselves and deserve an the misfortune
@get2sammyb I’d argue that the other problem is that there aren’t enough PS5-only games that are compelling enough to make people upgrade from PS4.
Good. They needed this after their sheer hubris with their latest games and the audacity of calling it to Gamers to "get used on not owning your games"
Ubisoft needs a massive overhaul. Their brand is so tainted now that I doubt any games would want to touch anything from them again. The Guillemot brothers need to go.
Ubi will either have to come back or get bought by someone after series of high profile failures. I think Xdefiants and Concord are not bad games, but the live action shooter genre is already crowded and has no place for new IPs. The main issue with Ubi is that their games are all similar first- or third person open world games.
Open world games, by their nature, have to be padded with mundane tasks. GTA, by its nature, do not have big issue to pad out with filler missions. I personally find most open world games would be better if they had fewer filler quests/missions. But again, there are some vocal minority who relate the number of hours with the cost. The longer does not mean the better. Even with linear games like TLOU and the plague, their first games are shorter but better.
@BusyOlf No wonder most of their games full of bugs on launch, that's a really short-term strategy which will f them in the future (which is now) 🤦🏻
@MasterChiefWiggum zero need to argue your point because it's fact, there simply just isn't enough ps5 only games for a console in its 4th year it's dreadful, maybe when ps6 comes we will get more ps5 🤔
@djlard Single player games that had multiplayer:
Mass Effect 3
Gears of War 1-3
Halo 1-3
AC4 blackflag
COD4 - black ops 2
Left 4 Dead 1-2
NBA2K16 (story mode was a big deal)
MGS4
TLOU 1
Tomb Raider 2013
Far Cry 3-4
Mortal Kombat 9-11
GTA 4-5
Killzone 3
Perfect Dark Zero
Borderlands 2
Bioshock 2
Bad company 2
Diablo 3
Elden Ring
Max Payne 3
RDR1-2
Ratchet & Clank 3
Midnight Club LA
Saints row 2-3
Uncharted 2
Street Fighter 6
etc
I can go on, these are all highly rated games with great single player content/story & good multiplayer . it seems like your gripe is just trophies. nowadays developers don’t have the talent, time, & money to make full games anymore that come with single player and multiplayer like 6th & 7th generation(& partially 8th) did , but that does not mean that multiplayer takes from the single player experience. gaming today is mostly just trash.
@nomither6 I agree. But still if you take this list, there are games where SP or MP heavily suffer. For example Diablo 3 is good as single (not as good as Diablo 2, but...) but multi it is only one huge visual noise, where you almost cannot orient. Mortal Kombat is extremely specific, because if you are not as fast as lightning you cannot stand in any MP match.
The rest I cannot say, because most of them I didn't play or avoided MP mode.
